ON ORDER from Rainbow Resource

I LOVE Rainbow Resource!!! Almost everything I wish to order, from all different companies,  can be ordered from them and if I buy at least $150 there is no shipping charges. I always save money when I order from them. (They offer "bargain" copies and discounted prices.)

Well, tax season is here and I've set aside money to pick up things I've been wanting...

A nice, plain Base 10 set. These will be fun to play with and, I think, a great visual-helper with place value.

Real Science 4 Kids Pre Level 1 Biology... every example I've found on the internet seems to be perfect for Aidan... it's simpler but advanced.

I'm crossing my fingers on this one.. the examples are so simple but cute.

Finally! From Critical Thinking Company...

Language Smarts B... I love the examples I've seen. They have a simple way of introducing early grammar.

Mathematical Reasoning:
Level B for Aidan as a supplementary and Beginning 2 for Ainsley as her main math.

Brian Puzzles!

(We've starting reading the Magic Tree House books and I bought these just for fun)

I cannot wait to see this box in the mail!!

Beautiful Morning

The beautiful, warm weather is starting to coax us outside. So this morning McMama and I took the girls to the park. We had a small picnic and fed the birds. I also squeezed in a mini-photo shoot.

Little Big Girl

Yesterday you had your first eye appointment. You loved it and exclaimed over everything. "You have a lot of interesting things in here" you said to the Optometrist. Everyone was charmed. You tickled them with your observations, manners, and cooperativeness. Well, it turns out, much to my surprise, you are far sighted and need glasses.

Far sighted? Where'd that come from? (I don't know anyone who is far sighted)

I have such mixed feelings about this.

You're so little and now your little face will be obscured. Your eyes will hide behind lenses.

And ...

Do you really need to look "smarter"? I'm not sure that's going to "help" you.

(But maybe looking older will help you???)

I kindof want to pretend I never took you in. You'll get along just fine without them.. right?

LOL

So, anyway, today we went looking for frames. At first you weren't overly happy about doing so but as soon as you realized that you'd get to "stay up today" as opposed to taking a nap you were happy. We found your pair at the first place we went. You fell in love with blue, wire frames with pretty blue butterflies on the sides. "They're pretty and I like pretty" you said.

They're too big for you but I too think they're cute and so we bought them. After 3 whole hours! 3 hours of waiting and trying to straighten the insurance out! Ugh!

Aidan, I'm so proud of you. I'm proud of your manners and I'm proud to see the smiles when you say your "Yes Sirs" and "No Ma'ams" I'm proud of how adults can ask you questions directly without going through me. I'm proud of what a trooper you were today.

You sat at the kid's table and read books... quietly but aloud. People came and stood behind you to listen, marveling at your skill. You completely ignored them. You'd found a new Berenstain to read and paid no attention.

A teacher came to sit by me. She asked me what I was going to do with you.

"Homeschool" I answered.

I'm worried about the effects of the attention you get. The older you get, the more pronounced the attention. You're fully aware of it too. I do believe I can accurately say you even expect it at this point. You're not as shy anymore. You're well- spoken and articulate and you say "smart" things. (I find myself mentally shaking my head at the difference in you. You used to be such a shy, scowling, withdrawn child.)  How will this change you? Will you be so full of yourself by 10 that no one will ever want to speak with you? I don't know how to "stop" it from happening. Even if I personally never ever made any mention, hint, or whatnot about your abilities I'm not sure it would matter. It's too obvious from other's reactions.

But...

So far at least I think I've done a good job with you.

Today reaffirmed that.

As a treat, and because you were so wonderfully behaved, I took you to get a special snack.... milk and a chocolate chip cookie. You jumped up and down in your excitement.

"This is the best day, Mommy. You and I got to have privacy time together. I love having privacy time with you" you tell me, chocolate smeared on your face, eyes shining.

"And I looooove spending time with you, my Aidan" I replied.

As we walked to the car... you chattered nonstop. I don't remember what about. I was too busy watching you swing my hand and skip with happiness. I was too busy enjoying you.

In the car I put in my new Bowersox cd and we both started singing along to it but by the time I'd exited the parking lot...  I no longer heard you. Glancing in the mirror I saw that you'd fallen asleep.

Your face was relaxed and tilted to the side. Your cheeks, I saw, were still babyishly rounded. With surprise, it struck me how exactly young you are.

Aidan didn't actually read a lot this week... we've both been sick and super busy.

On Order

Drops in The Bucket Math Level R for Ainsley and Level A for Aidan from Frog Publications. These worksheets are actually what the cousins' school uses for all the AIG students and Aidan loves them. I believe she views these "mixed-math" sheets as fun puzzles.

Dora... not the cartoon

One of my favorite blogs is Adventures in Ansleyland. Her daughter, Ansley, reminds me so much of Aidan and I love reading about her. She amazes me because she's actually younger than Aidan. Well, Ansley's mom tested her from an online test called Dora and after looking at it... I decided to have Aidan take the test as well.

I want to start out saying that I'm not really sure how accurate this test is. I haven't researched it and it seemed to me some of the questions were easily set up so that the child could figure out the answer from process of elimination.

Anyway... here are her results....

 High-Frequency Word Subtest
(examines the learner's ability to identify frequently occurring words. Responses are timed.)

Highest score possible:  High 3rd

Aidan's score: Middle 3rd  To be perfectly fair... she knew all the answers but mis-clicked on one. However, that is part of testing so the wrong answer still counts. She was really upset and from then on she was super careful.

Word Recognition Subtest
(measures ability to recognize varied leveled words)

Highest score possible: High 12th

Aidan's score: Mid 12th This score seems really overblown to me. I watched her do the test of course and I know she didn't "recognize" the words as in she knew them all. She figured out which word by listening to the sounds and eliminating options. So, I don't know if that form of "recognizing" should count or not.

Phonics Subtest
(assesses basic phonic rules using real and nonsense words)

Highest score possible: High 4th

Aidan's score: High 4th (not overly surprised at this one)

Spelling Subtest
(Assesses spelling skills)

Highest score possible: High 12th

Aidan's score: High 2nd (this seems right on with what I've judged her to be at as well)

Oral Vocabulary Subtest
(measures receptive oral vocabulary using leveled words)

Highest score possible: High 12th

Aidan's score: High 6th (I'll take their word on it)

Reading Comprehension
(I do not count this test as accurate. Because of Aidan's proficiency with the other tests... the excerpts they gave her to read were way too long and over her head. She basically answered what she knew and then guessed. Her score, still, was low 7th but I don't think its accurate)

What all this means?

Well, mostly, I think my Aidan is a good test taker and when she guesses... she guesses well. It is, of course, a nice way to try to assess because I will not have her professionally tested unless it's needed but is it accurate or likely to test high? Hmm? I also think, above all, it tells me to quit giving her "easy" things and to find level-appropriate work for her. (I'll try... but man... skipping so many levels at once makes me feel like she'll have a lot of holes in her learning!) At the very least, when I become aggravated enough from the nay-sayers in my life about Aidan and her abilities, I can pull out the results and say "Seeeee!!"  Some people just refuse to get it.*

*My sister was talking to me just today about how I should put Aidan in school and how she'll "even out" with the other kids. "It's not like she's genius level or anything" she said. LOL Ummm... yeah. "What", I wondered, "does she believe genius is"? Aidan is on the same level as my sister's 7.5 year old.  *shaking head here*

Busy Week!

Reading

This week Aidan fell in love with Uncle Wiggily's Storybook.  "I LOVE this book, Mommy" she says. With the exception of some Magic School Bus books, Aidan hasn't wanted to read anything else. For our read-aloud book we've been reading Nurse Matilda (Nanny McPhee was based on it). Hopefully we'll finish it sometime next week.

Ainsley read the first Bob book by herself this week. She's very proud of herself.

Math

I've decided to put up Aidan's textbook math curriculum for a while. This week she discovered mixed- math sheets and absolutely loves them! She is not really interested in doing formal lessons (I think they bore her) but rather spur-of-the-moment problems and the mixed sheets. So, I think I'll just put math on the back burner. She's quickly heading towards 2nd grade level math anyway and I love the idea of Aidan taking the lead in her learning for this semester. She still thinks math is fun and I want to keep it that way. Perhaps I'll start Singapore 1B in the summer. Because she is enjoying the mixed-math sheets I'm thinking of ordering Drops in The Bucket from Frog Publications.

More random wipe board exercises
Ainsley played with unifix cubes and made patterns.

Language

I made a large packet of phonics worksheets for Aidan. I took them out of E.T.C. books 2 and 2.5. Silly me! I though the whole packet would last all week but she sat down and completed it in an hour. HaHa! So, the rest of the week she worked in her handwriting book. I use all other work to practice handwriting and spelling. I still don't see the need to have her do formal spelling because she spells well already and I don't have a problem with helping her with the harder words.

I brought out the E.T.C. primer A book this week and Ainsley loved it. I'm quite pleased because Aidan never used them. I actually let Ainsley write in it because if I ever do have another kid... it will be far into the future before he/she will be needing it.

Science

We actually did a mini- science experiment this week! We only did the old celery in dyed water but both girls really enjoyed it.  I too actually enjoyed it especially because of their enthusiasm. Since we're not in our own house... big experiments are out but I'm going to try to do a lot of smaller ones.

1st page of Aidan's science notebook!

I love...

I love watching Ainsley play with her playsets. Lately she's been playing with her strawberry shortcake characters that she received for her birthday. I love her creative plot-lines. I love how unfazed she is with being alone.

I love seeing the tiny improvements with the older kids in their schoolwork. Slowly, slowly they are learning how to process information and how to take the information and produce nice work. I am having to hold their hands every step of the way but I am also holding on to the faith that soon they'll have the skills to do it themselves.

I love that I am the one teaching them these skills.

*sarcastically* I love how the school is reported to be "one of the best" yet they haven't learned how to research, or use a dictionary, how to spell simple words, or how to write one page papers.

I love Bennigan. LOL. Seriously, he is turning into a really cool dog. I like having a companion wherever I go.

I love that I'm not allergic to him.

I love my girl's happy little songs about nothing in particular.

I love how the older kids are more like brothers and sisters now to Aidan and Ainsley. Now, they argue and yell.

I love having the t.v.. in my room so that I can turn old movies on while I type late at night.

I love quiet time to myself.
